EXPLANATION: The Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (FDACS) administers the Florida Forest Service Urban and Community Forestry Hurricane Recovery Grant Program to provide grants to improve and re-establish urban forests in 29 counties of the peninsular region of the state that were negatively impacted by Hurricane Ian. The primary goal is to ensure that the urban forest is more resilient to future storms.
This Tree Planting Project will greatly further the replacement of trees lost during recent hurricanes and the tornado, supporting the restoration of the community’s vital green intrastructure. The Village aims to restore and enhance its urban forest by planting wind-resistant species to support energy efficiency, mitigate urban heat, improve water and air quality, reduce stormwater runoff, and enhance access to green spaces. These resilient tree choices will not only strengthen the Village’s defenses against future storms but also greatly enhance the quality of life for all Wellington residents. FDACS has awarded $50,000 in grant funding for the Tree Planting Project. Wellington’s required match is $12,500 for a total project of $62,500.
To accept the grant, the Village is required to sign the Grant Agreement. Approval of Resolution No. R2025-35 authorizes the Mayor, Village Manager, or Deputy Village Manager to enter into an agreement with FDACS for the grant. Approval of the associated Budget Amendment Resolution No. R2025-36 will allocate the grant monies for the Tree Planting Project.
