ITEM: ORDINANCE NO. 2024-03 (DESIGNATING THE PALM BEACH COUNTY CANVASSING BOARD AS THE VILLAGE CANVASSING BOARD FOR THE MARCH 19, 2024 WELLINGTON MUNICIPAL ELECTION)
AN ORDINANCE OF WELLINGTON'S COUNCIL DESIGNATING THE PALM BEACH COUNTY CANVASSING BOARD TO SERVE AS THE VILLAGE CANVASSING BOARD FOR THE MARCH 19, 2024 WELLINGTON MUNICIPAL ELECTION AND ANY REQUIRED RUNOFF ELECTION; PROVIDING A CONFLICTS CLAUSE; PROVIDING A SEVERABILITY CLAUSE; AND PROVIDING AN EFFECTIVE DATE.
REQUEST: Approval of Ordinance No. 2024-03 designating the Palm Beach County Canvassing Board as the Village Canvassing Board for the March 19, 2024 Wellington Municipal Election and any required runoff election.

EXPLANATION: The Palm Beach County Supervisor of Elections has requested that municipalities designate her to supervise uniform municipal elections that coincide with presidential preference primary elections in order to simplify and streamline the canvassing process and to reduce the burdens on municipalities. Wellington's Charter was amended by referendum on August 23, 2022 to permit Council to designate, by ordinance, the Palm Beach County Canvassing Board to serve as the Village Canvassing Board in such situations. In light of the upcoming uniform municipal election on March 19, 2024, which coincides with the 2024 Presidential Preference Primary Election, and any subsequent runoff election, staff recommends that the Council designate the Palm Beach County Canvassing Board as the Village Canvassing Board for the municipal election as set forth in Ordinance No. 2024-03.
