ITEM: RESOLUTION NO. R2026-42 (WALKSAFE & BIKESAFE)
A RESOLUTION OF WELLINGTON, FLORIDA'S COUNCIL, ENCOURAGING THE SCHOOL DISTRICT OF PALM BEACH COUNTY TO EVALUATE AND CONSIDER IMPLEMENTING THE WALKSAFE(r) (K-5) AND BIKESAFE(r) (6-8) EVIDENCE-BASED PEDESTRIAN AND BICYCLE SAFETY CURRICULA; ENCOURAGING PUBLIC AND PRIVATE ELEMENTARY AND MIDDLE SCHOOLS TO PARTICIPATE IN NATIONAL WALK & ROLL TO SCHOOL DAY AND NATIONAL BIKE & ROLL TO SCHOOL DAY; ENCOURAGING THE USE OF AVAILABLE EDUCATIONAL RESOURCES; AND PROVIDING FOR AN EFFECTIVE DATE.
REQUEST: Approve Resolution No. R2026-42 encouraging schools in Wellington to implement the WalkSafe and BikeSafe curricula and participation in the National Walk & Roll and Bike & Roll to School.

EXPLANATION: WalkSafe(r) is a no-cost, evidence-based pedestrian safety curriculum for students in Kindergarten through Grade 5, and BikeSafe(r) is a no-cost, evidence-based bicycle safety curriculum for students in Grades 6 through 8, both developed by the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine.
National Walk & Roll to School Day, held each October, and National Bike & Roll to School Day, held each May, reinforce classroom instruction, encourage healthy lifestyles, promote active transportation, increase awareness of pedestrian and bicycle safety, and strengthen partnerships among schools, families, law enforcement, and local governments.
The Village Council encourages the School District of Palm Beach County, school administrators, teachers, parents, PTAs/PTOs, the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office, Palm Beach County Fire Rescue, the Florida Department of Health in Palm Beach County, the Health Care District of Palm Beach County, the Palm Beach Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO), Safe Kids, healthcare providers, and other community organizations to work collaboratively to improve youth pedestrian, bicycle, and micromobility safety.
