EXPLANATION:   Wellington’s lakes and canals have been long viewed as just part of the stormwater infrastructure and a visual amenity, located in the rear yards of many Wellington residential properties. These manmade lakes and canals have shown to hold a dual purpose that can serve both stormwater needs and recreational purpose by providing for boating, canoeing, kayaking and alternative surface water uses, such as fishing, thereby adding an additional recreational component to Wellington’s lifestyle.

The implementation of the Blueways Master Plan identifies Wellington’s lakes and canals as an integral part of the recreation infrastructure which will enhance Wellington’ parks and recreation program and contribute directly to the economic vitality, environmental sustainability, and quality of life in Wellington. Wellington’s lakes and canals are an important part of the parks and recreation system for Wellington and it preserves, promotes, and protects public health, safety, and welfare.
