REQUEST: Presentation and recognition of the second-place winner of the Florida League of Mayors and Florida League of Cities “If I Were Elected Mayor” essay contest.

EXPLANATION: The Florida League of Mayors partners annually with the Florida League of Cities to offer the “If I Were Elected Mayor” essay contest to Florida 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students. Participants were required to write a 250-word essay describing how they would make a difference in their community if elected Mayor, and how Home Rule, the ability of local governments to address local problems with local solutions, helps make their community a great place to live. All middle school students in the State were invited to participate and more than 1,000 essays were submitted.
This year, Marialucia Hernandez, an 8th-grade student from Emerald Cove Middle School, won 2nd place.
In attendance to present the award and a $500 Visa gift card are Florida League of Mayors’ Executive Director Scott Dudley. Student Marialucia Hernandez and Emerald Cove Principal Eugina Smith Feaman will also be in attendance.
