REQUEST: Proclamation proclaiming May 2021 as “Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month” in the Village of Wellington.

EXPLANATION: In order to promote cultural diversity and raise awareness in our community, Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month is observed in May of each year, and celebrates the many contributions, sacrifices and achievements of Asian American and Pacific Islanders (AAPIs) to the economic, cultural, educational, political, artistic and technological development of the United States of America. AAPI heritage in the United States was first celebrated in 1978 and was made into a month-long event in 1992.
“Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month” is not currently on our Annual List of Proclamations, but will be added when the listing of Proclamations is presented to Council in August.
